Often recognized as the engine that spawned an interest in diesel tuning for thousands of European tuners, modifiers, and car fanatics, the humble VAG 1.9 PD provided a solid and highly adaptable platform for those seeking big power. The 1.9 TDI found its way into a multitude of VW Group products, including VW, Audi, Skoda, and SEAT. The engine range of the Passat Alltrack consists of two 2.0 litre TDI with outputs of 103 kW/140 hp & 125 kW/170 hp and two petrol engines, 1.8-litre producing 118 kW/160 hp and 2.0 litre TSI producing 155 kW/207 hp.
The 1.9TDi engine was designed for electronic control of the fuel pump which maximises the economy, power output and smooth running of the engine. Using a standard mechanical IDI pump, it won’t run efficiently as the injection pressures are too-low and the engine may suffer from fuelling and boost problems.
Volkswagen 1.4 TDI. VW’s most popular small diesel engine, the 1.9 TDI, has three cylinders and is fitted to a smaller model older than the Volkswagen Group. This engine is also installed on the Audi A2, Škoda Fabia and Seat Ibiza. The advantage is very low operating costs, but also has one serious technical drawback.
For my diesels, both IDI and TDI, which I have re-ringed (never needed pistons), I would not idle the car much, but rather drive it fairly hard, and try to avoid extended times of lower power settings.
